The Sounding Room is an experimental exhibition made by students from the Composition Program at The Academy of Music and Theatre in Göteborg. The installation Hovering Abode, made by Helena Persson and Eduardo Conceição (Berlin) is one of the pieces that will be presented at this exhibition.

Hovering Abode is an interdisciplinary experiment when it comes to both inspiration and expression. After seeing a drawing painted by the portuguese artist and architect Eduardo Conceição, Helena started developing her thoughts about the mobile life and its pros and cons, into a sounding scenario. The picture became the starting point of a correspondance built on pictures, photos, texts and words between the two of them. From this material a sketch evolved that later became an installation embodied in sound and architecture. Hovering Abode is a sounding sculpture, containing 6 speakers, surrounded by 4 speakers in a room. The sounds in the installation are field recordings.

It has been a busy week in Berlin starting up the construction of the future sounding sculpture created by Helena Persson and Eduardo Conceição. The Hovering Abode, as it is called, is the first joint collaboration between the two when it comes to art. The swedish-portuguese duo met in Stockholm while working on a theatre play for The Fringe Festival, where Eduardo made the scenography and Helena was doing sound and light. You will be able to experience the Hovering Abode at the exhibition called “The Sounding Room”, Jan 18-27, Röda Sten, Göteborg, Sweden.

Alsdorf. Einfach mal loslassen, den Tönen ganz viel Raum geben. Den vertrauten Klängen und den ungewöhnlichen. Um größtmögliche Freiheit geht es bei der «String Theory», um eine Musik ohne Grenzen. Dabei hat das internationale Musikprojekt «String Theory» bei der Präsentation im Alsdorfer Energeticon am Wochenende auch zahlreiche Künstler aus der Region in Szene gesetzt. In Berlin begann 2007 die musikalische Reise des Projekts, das in Göteborg sein zweites Standbein hat. So waren auch einige Musiker aus Schweden nach Alsdorf gereist, wo im Rahmen des Kulturfestivals der Städteregion Aachen ein fünftägiger Workshop stattfand.

Dabei versteht sich die «String Theory» als Netzwerk befreundeter Künstler, die in immer wechselnden Formationen Workshops und Konzerte geben. Der Abschluss dieser Etappe des Klangexperiments wurde zu einem Genuss für gut 400 Zuhörer.

Eine besondere Mischung

Rund 40 Künstler fanden Platz vor der Turbine im alten Bergmannsgebäude. Versierte Orchestermusiker trafen dort auf Mitglieder von Schülerbands, klassisch geschulte Instrumentalisten auf elektronische Klangbastler. Die Performance zog ihre Reize aus dieser Mischung. Während des 90-minütigen Auftritts hielten sich eingängiger Pop und herausfordernde Klangcollage fein die Waage.

Gleich zu Beginn wurde diese Richtung deutlich. Die Tonkünstlerin Helena Persson hatte während des Workshops Geräusche in Aachen und Alsdorf gesammelt, etwa von den Arbeiten am derzeitigen Ausbau der Euregiobahn. Dieses aufgezeichnete Brummen und Rattern eröffnete den Abend. Erst nach und nach umhüllten die Streicher die Geräuschkulisse und gaben dem Ganzen eine Form, dem Hörer einen Halt. Mal ganz geradlinig und rockig wie bei den Songs der Aachener Musiker Michael Witte und Spjelle, mal deutlich angeschrägt wie beim Stück «Nah dran» der Band Celno & Gypsies – die Arrangeure der «String Theory» hatten während der einwöchigen Proben viele Wege beschritten, um die von den regionalen Künstlern mitgebrachten Songs frisch zu interpretieren.

Am Dirigentenpult wechselten sich dabei Simon Bauer, Ben Lauber, Nils Tegen und Patrick Christiansen, der unter dem Künstlernamen «Nackt» firmiert, ab. Wobei sich der Part des jeweiligen musikalischen Leiters auf das Nötigste beschränkte. Nämlich darauf, das Ensemble herauszufordern und in immer neue Richtungen zu treiben. Mal druckvoll und groß, mal ganz verhalten agierten die Musiker und ließen den Sängern des Abends Platz, sich zu entfalten. Unterstützt wurde die soghafte Wirkung der Auftritte durch Videocollagen, die die Künstlerinnen Cherié (Berlin) und Christina Vantzou (Brüssel) in Alsdorf entwickelt hatten und auf eine Tuchbahn hinter den Musikern projizierten.

«Es geht um Freundschaften»

Geradezu hymnisch geriet das Finale: der Song «Take Me Far Out» der Aachener Band Alvida. Ein Pop-Song, mit Wucht gespielt und gesungen. Ein hymnischer Chorgesang und ein Abschluss, dem im Energeticon stehende Ovationen folgten. Das nächste Kapitel der «String Theory» soll in Paris aufgeschlagen werden, doch der Alsdorfer Workshop findet ebenfalls Nachklang: Die Stücke sollen demnächst auf CD veröffentlicht werden. Für Projektleiter Sebastian Gäbel ein logischer Schritt. «Wir sind total zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. In Alsdorf sind viele inte-ressante Künstler Teil des Projekts geworden. Darum geht es uns vor allem: um Freundschaften.»

July 16 2011, the workshop that had been going on for a whole week in Alsdorf was ended by a concert at the venue Energeticon. Selected songs by local artists are arranged by the composers Nackt, Ben Lauber and Nils Tegen for the string quartet Qvartiett and other classical musicians. Together with the artists the new renditions were rehearsed and documented during a five day workshop and then performed. In addition a sound art work called Energeticon was developed by sounds and impressions from the building. The soundscape written by Helena Persson was performed as an improvisation along with the orchestra, conducted by Ben Lauber. Read more about the performance.

Film artist Anna Linder and artist Johanna Gustafsson invited friends and art lovers to “Salong Grindsgatan” – where a sound installation by Helena Persson, a poetry reading by Pär Thörn and songs by Ellekari Larsson Zander were performed, June 16.

On May 24, sounds will be added to the ongoing exhibition of Ester Henning´s embroidery works at Skövde Konsthall. You will be able to listen to a composition of lively needlework.
